RESUM

Abstract: Since the beginning of my academic career, I have pursued research aimed at contributing to the transformation of human systems. Shaping pathways that both safeguard our planet and expand human well-being is a collective endeavour that requires addressing multiple challenges and opening diverse routes for change. Over the past 15 years, my work has evolved from innovation studies to sustainability transitions and human development.

Through the Transformative Innovation Policy Consortium (TIPC), I have examined the meaning and practice of transformative innovation policy as a global knowledge infrastructure (Velasco et al., 2024). More recently, as part of the Deep Transitions Lab, I have engaged in field-building for transformative investment. Both initiatives involve participatory action research, where experimentation serves as a methodology to bring diverse stakeholders into the research process, enhancing both knowledge and practice.

In this seminar, I will discuss the Deep Transitions framework, which provides a long-term historical perspective for analysing systemic challenges and building pathways that lead from optimisation to transformation (Kanger & Schot, 2019; Schot & Kanger, 2018). I will expand this perspective with a justice dimension informed by the Human Development approach (Velasco et al., 2021; Boni et al., 2025). Finally, I will explore the role of transdisciplinary platforms in facilitating just transitions, transforming higher education systems, and advancing the knowledge and praxis of transformative innovation policy and investment.

Short Bio: Diana Velasco is a researcher at INGENIO (CSIC–UPV) working on socio-technical transitions. Her work focuses on innovation studies, with an emphasis on sustainability transitions and human development. She has extensive experience in university leadership, having served as Director of Research and Innovation at Universidad del Rosario (Bogotá) and as Vice-Rector for Research at Universidad de Ibagué (Colombia). In recent years, she has led experimental research collaborations with policymakers and private investors to advance transformative change in two transdisciplinary platforms, the Transformative Innovation Policy Consortium and the Deep Transitions Lab.
