Making music together. An engaged approach to innovative scholarship

ABSTRACT: This talk consists of a reflective journey through my career as a young scholar exploring social and methodological innovation. I will begin by sharing formative experiences that shaped my research interests and culminated in my PhD thesis on arts-based city-making in the peripheries of Latin American cities. From there, I will discuss my current work at INGENIO focused on the green and democratic transitions of European cities. Finally, I will outline my long-term academic aspirations.
Throughout the presentation, I will use the concept of “collective music-making” in three interconnected ways: 1) literally, as a social practice where people come together to perform music; 2) figuratively, as a metaphor for broader social phenomena that unite communities around shared goals; 3) methodologically, as an innovative research approach that leverages creative practices to surface knowledge in novel and thrilling ways.
BIO: Sóc un músic i arquitecte valencià convertit en investigador-actor en estudis urbans. La meua investigació aborda la importància dels processos col·lectius artístics i creatius per “fer ciutat” des de les perifèries urbanes. Durant els meus estudis de màster en MIT i de doctorat a Cornell University (EUA), he dedicat els darrers set anys a estudiar i col·laborar amb iniciatives culturals comunitàries a les perifèries de ciutats llatinoamericanes com Oaxaca, São Paulo i Medellín. Com a investigador postdoctoral a INGENIO, em centraré en l'estudi dels processos col·laboratius necessaris per aconseguir ciutats europees més justes i sostenibles per a tots els col·lectius que hi habiten, i em compromet a orientar els meus processos de recerca-acció cap al disseny i la implementació de polítiques públiques i pràctiques socials viables.
