ABSTRACT: This talk consists of a reflective journey through my career as a young scholar exploring social and methodological innovation. I will begin by sharing formative experiences that shaped my research interests and culminated in my PhD thesis on arts-based city-making in the peripheries of Latin American cities. From there, I will discuss my current work at INGENIO focused on the green and democratic transitions of European cities. Finally, I will outline my long-term academic aspirations.
Throughout the presentation, I will use the concept of “collective music-making” in three interconnected ways: 1) literally, as a social practice where people come together to perform music; 2) figuratively, as a metaphor for broader social phenomena that unite communities around shared goals; 3) methodologically, as an innovative research approach that leverages creative practices to surface knowledge in novel and thrilling ways.
BIO: I am a musician and an architect from Valencia who became an action-researcher in urban studies. My research explores city-making through arts-based and other creative collective processes on the urban peripheries. As a master’s student at MIT and a doctoral student at Cornell University (USA), I have spent the last seven years studying and collaborating with community-led cultural initiatives on the peripheries of Latin American cities like Oaxaca, São Paulo, and Medellín. In my new role as a postdoctoral researcher at INGENIO, I am looking forward to researching on the collaborative processes needed to make European cities fairer and more sustainable for all, and I am committed to turning my action research processes into actionable policymaking and social practices.
